I would sure love it to be, because now I’m having a beer in a somber mood after reading my local police blotter. Just another day on planet Earth, I guess.

Kinja'd!!!

Just some poor bastard loading tools, not even on the damn road. Cop doubles the speed limit and blows through a stop sign. I’m sure he’ll get a severe slap on the wrist.

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Yeah that’s right. Not at a doorstep, or hospital, or cardboard box, or even a dumpster in a low-traffic alley. A fucking TRASH COMPACTOR. Abortion? Nah. Adoption? Feh! Sensible abandonment? What are you, soft? Trash compactor? Yeah, let’s go with that.

That shit will drive you nuts if you let it.

Don’t let it.

I find I’m actually getting less apathetic with time. This could be a problem.

The second one, especially, is a shame because pretty much every state has a safe haven law on the books where it’s legal for a mother to drop off a baby at a designated safe haven. Usually, that includes any hospital, fire house or police station. In some cases, the mother can even remain anonymous. In Washington state, a baby up to three days old can be relinquished.

http://safehaven.tv/states/washing…

Safe haven laws have been instrumental in decreasing rates of infanticide.

I just don’t understand why she would do this. Her pregnancy was known. Other times I’ve heard of this kind of stuff happening, the mother had tried to hide her pregnancy, or didn’t know she was pregnant, or some other similar thing.

Ugh.

I'm just glad the baby was found before it was too late. I hope he's placed in a good home.

You’re human. Personally, I’d start getting concerned if I stopped feeling emotion when confronted with the ugly side of humanity.

For me, though, as someone who works in media and has sometimes had to report on the awful things, I’ve learned to build a certain detachment in the moment. Enough to focus on gathering and then disseminating information. It catches up eventually though. But usually by the time it has, it’s not as visceral as it would have been had I allowed myself to get distracted. Some stories hit harder than others, though, and no amount of mental fortification can prepare you for them.

One way I’ve found that helps in dealing with the negative emotions and the sense of “humanity sucks” is to pour time and energy into the examples of humanity rocking. Shine light on the people who work hard to help their neighbors. Pour my own energy into trying to do that, too. Helping someone else goes a long way not only towards making yourself feel better and (of course) helping that person/people, but also in restoring your faith in humanity.

Like Mr. Rogers used to say, when times are bad, look for the helpers. They’re always there.

How close to 40 are you? Do you have kids?

I’m long past the “why does XYZ happen” but I always acknowledge the sheer randomness of life, in the grand scheme and personally. I take my jollies when I can. Also why I drive old ass cars I enjoy instead of a newer Camry with 37 air bags and crumple zones. I’m going to enjoy the ride.

It was like... literally the worst choice to make. Another of the above mentioned options, or the ones in my post, would have sufficed.

Oh hell. You still have a lot of time to be selfish.

Concentrate on the family and do everything you can. When you think you’ve done enough, do more.

I lost sleep over two days over a child abandonment i witnessed in a hotel i frequent for work. Untill i wrote a flash fiction story using it, i couldnt deal with it. Parents in a hotel. Separate rooms. Mom up and leaves. Daughter wandering halls for 2 hours. Dad had no idea. (Obviously things werent good if parents cant be in the same room) There some real fucking winners but to be real about it, theyre part of what goes on out there and serve to remind us not to take what we have for granted. I hugged my kids extra when i got home.

It’s especially terrible since the poor kid neither asked to be born or chose his parents. They are supposed to be the responsible ones.

Too bad it's not more difficult to actually make a child.

It's been especially grim here lately. The guy cutting up that poor girl and then dumping her parts all over what put me over the edge.

Ironic. Last night’s 20/20 was on a woman that abandoned not 1, not 2, but 3 babies!!!! Who eventually found each other when they got older and found their mother through DNA databases.

I think it was in California where a cop ran over and killed the former CFO of Napster, and didn’t even get a stern talking to because it happened while he was “doing his job”.

I’m hoping this man will sue and get everything.
